La Jolla Beach Camp – Ensenada BC, Mexico

RATING: ♦♦♦♦
  • Dates: Feb 19, 2019 – Mar 1, 2019
  • Length of stay: 10 nights
  • Cost per night: Included in caravan cost.
  • Discount: SKP caravan group rate
  • Hookups: 15 amp electric, with water, dump, and propane trucks available.
  • Site number/quality: #40. Beach front sites had no hookups. We were in the second row, and had 15 amp electric.
  • Park Quality: This is a rustic beach campground south of Ensenada city. The camping is basically a large, sandy parking lot. Because there were over 50 rigs in our group, we were all packed in rather tight, especially those along the beach. But the campground would normally have plenty of room for rigs of any size. All of us had easy beach access with lovely views of the mountains and water. There are also a couple of clean bathhouses, with toilets and showers. One of the most unique features of the beach is that hot springs flow down from the mountains and under the sandy beach, on out to the ocean. Bathers can dig a shallow hole in the sand when the tide is out and soak in a homemade hot tub.
  • Access: The campground is about 10 miles south of Ensenada off Federal Highway 1 on Route 23. The road through Ensenada was busy and potholes were plentiful. But overall, drivers are understanding and courteous, and allow a bit of zigging and zagging around the traffic hazards.
  • Connectivity: AT&T was good. T-Mobile was spotty.
  • Return yes/no?: Probably not. The area is beautiful and the locals are wonderful. But the roads in Ensenada are a major discouragement.
  • Notes: This was where we spent the bulk of our time during the Mexican Connection rally. We ate and drank, had a charity auction, participated in some community service, were entertained by local musicians and dancers, and ate and drank some more. But most of all, we enjoyed each other’s company and made some wonderful friends that we will stay in touch with and plan to see again. Unfortunately, the weather was much cooler than is typical during this time of year, and it rained a lot during the first few days of our stay.
